Pet Canvas

Photo Story About Experience: I house and pet sat for a couple who I was referred to by my boss. I met them, for the first time, 3 days before my 7 day live-in adventure and was given the responsibility to take care of their 2 dogs, 7 cats, 3 birds, a turtle and their huge gorgeous house. During my time there I started photographing the pets and emailing them to their owners so they knew they were ok. I love animals so I think they are all so lovely but these pets were so affectionate also and would get so close to you and sit on your lap and shoulders that I began to see them from an abstract angle and saw them as artwork. So during lounging time, I caught one of the white cats in full relaxation mode. He let me get so close him, I didn’t even use my full zoom for this shot. I adjusted the lens to focus and used natural, back, sunlight from the window behind him. No flash needed! Such a beautiful creature! (I think I submitted one before this on accident. Disregard that one, Â sorry!)

PhotoLord.com has moved to a different platform for the daily photo contest. We’re trying out SmugMug.com The main reason is that I like how it works for larger quantities of photographs. It also has some excellent presentations for photography. Check out this layout design for photos. Smugmug is also easier to upload and more flexible for galleries. WordPress simply can not compete in this department. I’ll give Smugmug a try, and then reassess. If I can free up more of my time, then I think that is a plus. On the downside is the lost subscriptions as well as lost social interaction. I think with the new features WordPress has been rolling out, Smugmug is behind in interacting. Again, I’ll have to see if this will be too much of a compromise.
On another note, we’re going to start offering new submissions the chance of having their photograph featured in our new photo contest magazine. If you have any suggestions, ideas, and experience with magazine publication, let me know. I’m thinking it would be so cool to have the best photographers show off their work so others can appreciate it as well.

Photo Story About Experience: Located near Cape Perpetua, OR. I have said before and continue to insist that this is probably the most dangerous photo I have ever taken. To achieve the best effects required the right combination of medium-high tide, big surf, and of course good lighting. This all meant that in-between pictures I was getting hammered with waves while frantically trying to protect my camera and keep it dry. Meanwhile I’m standing about 150ft off shore surrounded by jagged rocks and uneven footing. Needless to say I was relieved when I was back on shore with my equipment and body still in one piece and functioning.

Photo Story About Experience: I saw the snake’s tail emerging from a hole in the ground. Curious, I gave it a gentle tug and out came this shocking scene. The species can grow up to 1.9 m (6.2 ft.). This was taken a number of years ago, just found it in my photo archives. I don’t recall what camera I was using at the time.

Photo Story About Experience: It was early morning when we ascended into the Himalayan village of Chukhung, in the valley next to Everest. In the early morning sun, the warm, rising clouds slowly overtook us, until we were shrouded in haze. Occasionally, the clouds would break, revealing fleeting glimpses of grazing yaks, or frozen mountain summits. And at one point, for a few fleeting seconds, we caught a glimpse of both…

Your Name: Jake Horttor
Photo Story About Experience: My wife and I recently spent a weekend in Portland, Oregon, and while walking downtown, we came across this building lit up with the setting evening sun. I had to take this photo. I took several photos on the walk, which you can see on my own blog page (see link below), but this is one of the most striking shots I have ever taken of this type of object or environment! Enjoy.

Photo Story About Experience: I awoke around 5AM to the pounding of tablas and the cries of Sikh bhajan singers, on a hard, pillow-less mattress in the Golden Temple of Amritsar. The singing was so loud that falling back asleep was out of the question, and so I willed myself out of bed for an early morning stroll around the temple.
As I circumambulated the man-made lake, I saw one of the temple guards leaning on his wooden spear and calmly staring out across the water, as the roiling, black clouds of the monsoon rolled in from Delhi in the south. Before it even occurred to me to take a picture, I stood there for a long moment, watching the encroaching storm slowly blot out the rising sun, casting everything in a pale, bluish light, except for the guard’s vibrant orange shalwar kameez, which slapped about his legs in the sticky-hot breeze of the Panjab monsoon. This is my first submission ever to a photo contest of this nature. I have only been doing photography seriously for 4 months now. I received the Canon Rebel T3i for Christmas and I spend nearly every day practicing, reading, learning, practicing, practicing, practicing. Recently, I spent several days in Washington, D.C. and 1 of the photos I took stood out to me so, I figured, “Hey, why not?” So, here it is.

Photo Story About Experience: Recently the daisies here have begun blooming, and they are literally everywhere you look. I discovered that the vacant lots I run by every day on my morning runs were covered with them, and so I set out one morning to photograph them covered in morning dew. What I thought was just a 20 minute session actually turned out to be 90 minutes in the field. I guess time really does fly by when you’re out having fun.

Story – I was going fishing and I came up on this turn in the road and thought it looked good.

Taken on 3/17/12
It was very overcast and literally raining while I took the shot! Dangerous for my camera but I had to have it! : ) There is a park near my house where I walk my dog several times a week. This time of year there are always tangles of orange plant life clinging to the bushes, I have no idea what it is but it looks like spaghettti squash. When I looked closer I could see hundreds of little rain drops hung on and between these orange threads.
I used my Nikon 55-300mm with a raynox M150 adaptor 5.6 1/180 ISO 400 to capture the hidden world inside one of these tiny raindrops.

I was having a terrible day snapping photos outside, very frustrated with everything that I seemed to be getting, making me question if I REALLY knew what I was doing or not. I had some 200 snaps and felt like had nothing but garbage. As I was walking back to my car to give up, I saw these beautiful trees with these puffs of blossoms growing on the trunks. ‘Dare I try to snap after such a discouraging couple hours?’ I did, and am so glad. Sometimes even in the most discouraging uninspired times you can find beauty.

At a rare showing of some of the most exotic, rare and expensive cars in the world no camera with flash were allowed. My option was to use my handy cell phone. Getting photos without signs and people to distract from the auto was not possible. So the people, signs and furniture have all been transformed into streaks of color that are reminiscent of wind blowing past.
I hope it is worthy of consideration in your photo competition.
